Penny Pritzker was born on May 2, 1959, in Chicago, Illinois, into the prominent Pritzker family, known for their business ventures, including Hyatt Hotels. From an early age, Pritzker demonstrated an interest in business, accompanying her father, Donald Pritzker, to Hyatt hotels and engaging with her grandfather, A. N. Pritzker, on business matters. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Harvard University in 1981, followed by a Juris Doctor and an MBA from Stanford University in 1985. Her initial ventures within the family business included founding Classic Residence by Hyatt (later Vi) in 1987, a luxury senior living concept, and Pritzker Realty Group in 1991, which focused on real estate development.
Pritzker’s career progressed with significant leadership roles and entrepreneurial endeavors. From 1991 to 1994, she served as chairperson of Superior Bank of Chicago. In 1995, she was named as one of three successors to Jay Pritzker, overseeing the family’s extensive business assets, a role that involved navigating complex family business interests and ultimately overseeing the dissolution of some family holdings in 2001. She co-founded Artemis Real Estate Partners LLC in 2009 and established PSP Capital Partners in 2011. Her civic engagement has included serving on the Chicago Board of Education and chairing the Chicago Public Education Fund.
Her public service culminated in her appointment as the 38th U.S. Secretary of Commerce by President Barack Obama, a position she held from June 26, 2013, to January 20, 2017. In this role, Pritzker focused on promoting trade, investment, and innovation, and was a key member of Obama’s economic team. Her tenure involved advocating for the Trans-Pacific Partnership, establishing the Digital Economy Board of Advisors, and leading negotiations for the E.U.–U.S. Privacy Shield. Following her government service, she returned to the private sector and her investment firms. In 2023, she was appointed U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine’s Economic Recovery by President Joe Biden, serving until August 2024.
