Phoebe Tonkin was born on July 12, 1989, in Sydney, Australia. Her early training included dance classes in classical ballet, hip hop, contemporary, and tap dance starting at age four. At 12, she enrolled in courses at the Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) at the Wharf Theatre, further developing her performance skills. She attended Loreto Kirribilli and later graduated from the Queenwood School for Girls.
Tonkin gained early recognition in December 2005 when she was cast as Cleo Sertori in the Australian children’s television series H2O: Just Add Water. The series, which premiered in July 2006 on Network Ten, follows three teenage girls who become mermaids. During pre-production, Tonkin enhanced her swimming abilities for the role. The show achieved international syndication, reaching over 250 million viewers worldwide. In October 2007, she promoted the series by presenting at the Nickelodeon UK Kids’ Choice Awards. Her performance in H2O: Just Add Water led to a nomination for “Best Lead Actress in a Television Series” at the Australian Film Institute Awards in 2008. The series concluded its three-season run in April 2010.
In January 2011, Tonkin relocated to Los Angeles to pursue acting internationally. She secured a role as Faye Chamberlain in The CW’s supernatural drama series The Secret Circle in March 2011. The series, which premiered in September 2011 to 3.5 million viewers, featured her as a member of a secret coven of witches. Tonkin received positive critical feedback, with Variety listing her as a “new face to watch” and E! Online naming her as one of 2011’s breakout TV stars, solidifying her presence in the international television landscape.
