Italian swimmer Rachele Bruni is an Olympic silver medallist and European multi-gold medallist. She was the first Italian to win the FINA Marathon Swimming World Series, a tournament she has now won three times. Since winning her first gold medal at the 2008 European Aquatics Championships in Dubrovnik, she has gone on to accumulate a total of eight golds, two silvers, and a bronze at successive tournaments. At the World Aquatics Championships, she has also won a number of medals, her most recent being silver and bronze in the 2019 finals held in South Korea.
Bruni competes across a range of distances, including 5km and 10km, swimming both individually and as part of the Italian relay team. She specialises in long-distance open water swimming, something proved by her multiple wins in the FINA Marathon Swimming World Series. Formerly known as the World Cup, this is an elite series that runs over several months and consists of nine separate races in various seas and lakes around the world. Bruni won the notoriously competitive series in 2015, 2016, and 2019.
Bruni secured her place in world swimming history with an Olympic medal at the 2016 games in Rio. Competing in the 10km open water marathon, she initially won bronze. She was awarded silver when the swimmer who finished ahead of her was found to have obstructed Bruni. She may have an impressive past, but having qualified to be Italy’s sole female competitor in the 10km open water marathon at the Tokyo Olympics, Rachele Bruni’s future is looking just as bright.
