Renato Júnior Luz Sanches was born on August 18, 1997, in Amadora, Portugal. His early life involved training at Águias da Musgueira from the age of eight before entering Benfica’s youth system at nine in 2006. His talent was quickly recognized, leading to his professional debut for Benfica B in October 2014 and for the senior team in October 2015. During his first and only season with Benfica, he played a pivotal role in the team securing the Primeira Liga and Taça da Liga double. His impressive performances at Benfica earned him critical acclaim, including the Primeira Liga Breakthrough Player and the Golden Boy award in 2016, marking him as one of Europe’s most promising young talents.
Sanches’ career trajectory saw him move to German powerhouse Bayern Munich in July 2016 for an initial fee of €35 million, becoming the most expensive Portuguese player to transfer from the domestic league at the time. Despite high expectations, his initial season at Bayern was challenging, leading to a loan spell at Premier League club Swansea City in August 2017 to gain regular playing time. Upon his return, he began to regain form, scoring his first UEFA Champions League goal for Bayern against his former club Benfica in September 2018. In August 2019, Sanches transferred to French Ligue 1 side Lille for €20 million, where he was instrumental in their 2020–21 Ligue 1 title victory, ending the club’s ten-year drought.
His career then led him to Paris Saint-Germain in August 2022 for €10 million, where he continued to demonstrate his abilities in the midfield. Subsequent loan spells included A.S. Roma in August 2023 and a return to Benfica in August 2024. Most recently, in August 2025, Sanches joined Greek club Panathinaikos on a season-long loan. On the international stage, Sanches earned 40 caps for Portugal at youth level before making his senior international debut in March 2016. He was a key member of the Portugal squad that won UEFA Euro 2016, becoming the youngest Portuguese player to play in an international tournament and the youngest player to win a UEFA Euro final. His contributions were recognized with the Young Player of the Tournament award.
