About

Rory J. Scovel was born in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 6, 1980. He attended Greenville Senior High School, graduating in 1999, and later earned a communications degree from the University of South Carolina Upstate in 2003, where he played Division II soccer. His comedic career began in December 2003 at an open mic night in Spartanburg, South Carolina, followed by moves to Washington D.C., New York City, and eventually Los Angeles to pursue his career.

Scovel gained early recognition in comedy, making the finals of the Seattle International Comedy Competition in 2006. His stand-up gained national exposure with appearances on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” in 2010 and “Conan” in 2011. That same year, he released his debut stand-up album, “Dilation,” through Stand Up! Records. In 2012, Variety magazine named him among their “10 Comics to Watch.” He continued to expand his reach with specials like “Rory Scovel: The Charleston Special” in 2015 and “Rory Scovel Tries Stand-Up for the First Time” on Netflix in 2017. His latest special, “Rory Scovel: Religion, Sex, and a Few Things in Between,” premiered in 2024.

Beyond stand-up, Scovel has built a notable acting career. He was a main cast member on the TBS sitcom “Ground Floor” from 2013 to 2015 and later joined TruTV’s “Those Who Can’t” (2016-2019) as Principal Quinn. His film credits include co-starring in “I Feel Pretty” (2018) alongside Amy Schumer and a role in “Babylon” (2022). He also contributed as a writer for “The Eric Andre Show” from 2013 to 2016 and created, co-wrote, and starred in his own Comedy Central series, “Robbie,” in 2020. Since 2021, Scovel has starred as Danny Rubin in the Apple TV+ series “Physical.”
