Shaun Mark Bean was born on April 17, 1959, in Handsworth, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, to Rita and Brian Bean. He initially worked in his father’s welding firm before developing an interest in acting. Bean attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, graduating in 1983. His early career included stage work with the Royal Shakespeare Company and various television productions. He made his film debut in Derek Jarman’s “Caravaggio” in 1986. Recognition grew with his role as Richard Sharpe in the ITV series “Sharpe,” which ran from 1993 to 1997.
Bean’s career expanded into Hollywood with roles such as an Irish republican terrorist in “Patriot Games” (1992) and the antagonist Alec Trevelyan in the James Bond film “GoldenEye” (1995). He achieved international acclaim for his portrayal of Boromir in Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy (2001–2003). His filmography includes diverse roles in productions like “National Treasure” (2004), “Troy” (2004), “Flightplan” (2005), and “The Martian” (2015).
