About

Sheryl Kara Sandberg, born on August 28, 1969, in Washington, D.C., is an American technology executive, philanthropist, and writer. After her family moved to North Miami Beach, Florida, when she was two, she attended North Miami Beach High School, graduating in 1987. She continued her education at Harvard College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1991, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. During her time at Harvard, she co-founded Women in Economics and Government and worked as a research assistant to Lawrence Summers at the World Bank, focusing on health projects in India related to leprosy, AIDS, and blindness. She further pursued her education at Harvard Business School, receiving her MBA in 1995 with the highest distinction.

Sandberg’s early career included a year as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company (1995–1996) before returning to work with Lawrence Summers as his chief of staff from 1996 to 2001, when he served as the United States Secretary of the Treasury under President Bill Clinton. In this role, she contributed to efforts in forgiving debt in the developing world during the Asian financial crisis. She joined Google in 2001, where she was responsible for online sales of advertising and publishing products, and sales operations for consumer products and Google Book Search. Her tenure at Google saw the ad and sales team expand from four to 4,000 individuals, a significant period of growth.

In 2008, Sheryl Sandberg was recruited by Mark Zuckerberg to join Facebook as its Chief Operating Officer, a role she held until the fall of 2022. She is credited with transforming Facebook’s business operations and making the company profitable through the strategic development of its advertising model. In 2012, she became the first woman to be elected to Facebook’s board of directors. Beyond her corporate achievements, Sandberg is the author of best-selling books, “Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead” (2013) and “Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience and Finding Joy” (2017), and is the founder of LeanIn.Org, advocating for women in leadership. In 2021, she co-launched Sandberg Bernthal Venture Partners to invest in startups, and has continued her philanthropic work, notably through the Sheryl Sandberg & Dave Goldberg Family Foundation.
