Siobhan Bernadette Haughey, born on October 31, 1997, in Hong Kong, embarked on her swimming journey early, joining the South China Athletic Association. She made history in her youth, becoming the first Hong Kong swimmer to medal at the World Junior Championships in 2013, winning gold in the 100-meter freestyle. Her talent quickly became evident as she secured two silver and five bronze medals at the 2013 East Asian Games, making her the most decorated Hong Kong athlete at a single edition of these games. Haughey continued to rise, earning two silver medals at the 2014 Youth Olympics in the 100-meter freestyle and 200-meter individual medley, solidifying her position as a promising athlete.
Haughey’s career progressed significantly with her participation in the Olympic Games. She first competed at the Rio 2016 Olympics, becoming the first Hong Kong swimmer in 64 years to reach an Olympic semi-final, finishing 13th in the 200-meter freestyle. She further cemented her legacy at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics by winning two silver medals in the 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle events, becoming the first Hong Kong athlete to win two individual Olympic medals. Her achievements continued at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, where she won two bronze medals in the 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle, making her the first Hong Kong athlete to win four Olympic medals. Beyond the Olympics, she became Hong Kong’s first World Record holder in the 200-meter freestyle (short course) at the 2021 World Short Course Championships.
In addition to her Olympic successes, Haughey has excelled at other major international competitions. She earned her first long-course world title at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships, winning gold in the 200-meter freestyle, alongside silver in the 100-meter freestyle and bronze in the 100-meter breaststroke. At the 2022 Asian Games, she secured two gold medals in the 100-meter and 200-meter freestyle, a silver in the 50-meter freestyle, and three bronze medals in relays and the 50-meter breaststroke, becoming the most decorated Hong Kong athlete at that event. Throughout her career, Haughey has registered 24 Hong Kong records and 6 Asian records, demonstrating consistent excellence in the pool. She also represented Energy Standard in the International Swimming League, showcasing her talent in professional team settings.
