Slim Jim Phantom stands as an influential figure in rockabilly and rock and roll, known primarily as the drummer for the Stray Cats and a prolific collaborator in various supergroups. After co-founding the iconic rockabilly band Stray Cats in the late 1970s with Lee Rocker and Brian Setzer, Slim Jim Phantom established himself as a pivotal figure in the neo-rockabilly movement. Their unique sound, blending 1950s rock-n-roll with youthful energy, quickly garnered widespread acclaim. The band’s debut album, Built for Speed, achieved double platinum certification, while their smash hit ‘Rock This Town’ was later inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s ‘The Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.’ Phantom’s distinctive standing drum style, utilizing a minimalist kit, became a signature element of the band’s energetic live performances.
A career highlight came in 1985 when Phantom appeared in London’s ‘Blue Suede Shoes: A Rockabilly Session’ alongside rock and roll icon Carl Perkins, sharing the stage with legendary musicians including Eric Clapton, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. He further cemented his connections to rock and roll royalty through performances with Jerry Lee Lewis. The late 1990s and early 2000s marked a prolific period for Phantom as he formed several notable supergroups. He co-founded The Head Cat, a rockabilly powerhouse, with Danny B.
His passion for rockabilly is also evident as the host of the ‘Rockabilly Rave-up show’ on Little Steven’s Underground Garage. In 2021, Phantom expanded his collaborative ventures, co-forming a new rockabilly band with acclaimed artists Jimmy Barnes and Chris Cheney. This collaboration subsequently evolved into the acclaimed group The Barnestormers. Demonstrating his enduring influence and creative drive, The Barnestormers released their self-titled debut album in 2023, marking another significant milestone in Slim Jim Phantom’s storied career.
