Joe Moglia

Joseph Hugh Moglia, born on April 1, 1949, in New York City, built a career characterized by significant achievements in both football coaching and business. After earning a bachelor’s degree in economics from Fordham University in 1971 and a Master of Science in education from the University of Delaware in 1974, Moglia spent 16 years coaching football. His early coaching career included roles at Fordham Prep (1968–1970), Archmere Academy (1971–1974), Penncrest HS (1975–1978), Lafayette (assistant, 1978–1980), and Dartmouth (defensive coordinator, 1981–1983), where he won two Ivy League championships. In 1984, Moglia left coaching to enter the business world, joining Merrill Lynch’s MBA training program. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the top producer globally by 1988.

Moglia spent 17 years at Merrill Lynch, holding positions on both the Institutional and Private Client Executive Committees, and was responsible for investment products, the insurance company, the 401(k) business, and the middle-market business. In 2001, he became CEO of TD Ameritrade. During his seven-year tenure as CEO, client assets grew from $24 billion to over $300 billion, and the company’s market capitalization increased from $700 million to $12 billion, delivering a 500 percent return to shareholders. He oversaw major mergers and acquisitions, including Datek Online Holdings in 2002 and TD Waterhouse in 2006. In 2008, Moglia stepped down as CEO but continued as Chairman until 2020, when TD Ameritrade was acquired by Charles Schwab, creating a combined entity worth $100 billion with $7 trillion in client assets.

In 2009, Moglia returned to coaching, serving as executive advisor to the head football coach at the University of Nebraska. He was named head coach of the United Football League’s Omaha Nighthawks in 2011. The following year, he became the head football coach at Coastal Carolina University. During his six seasons there, the Chanticleers achieved a 56–22 record, winning four Big South Conference championships (2012, 2013, 2014, 2016) and reaching the NCAA Football Championship Playoffs five times. He was named the Eddie Robinson FCS National Coach of the Year in 2015 and was inducted into the Lombardi Hall of Fame in 2017. Moglia stepped down from coaching in 2019 but remains involved with Coastal Carolina as Chair of the Coastal Carolina Athletics Division, Executive Director for Football, and Executive Adviser to the President. He is also Chairman of Fundamental Global Investors and Capital Wealth Advisors.
