Sophie Hopkins

Sophie Lisa Hopkins was born in Singapore to Irish and Estonian parents and grew up in the Yorkshire Wolds, East Riding of Yorkshire. She pursued a national diploma in Performing Arts and Musical Theatre at City of York College, graduating in 2009. In 2010, Hopkins moved to London where she trained with the Identity School of Acting (IDSA) and joined the Fourth Monkey Theatre Company, establishing a foundation in theatrical performance before transitioning to screen roles.

Hopkins gained wider recognition in April 2016 when she was cast as April MacLean in the BBC Three Doctor Who spin-off ‘Class’. Her character was described as “socially awkward” but also “compassionate, kind,” and “extraordinarily brave.” This role, which involved 7 episodes in 2016, positioned her as a significant figure within the Doctor Who universe. Following her success in ‘Class’, Hopkins made her feature film debut in the horror-thriller ‘Brackenmore’ in the same year. In 2018, she reprised her role as April MacLean in six ‘Class’ audio plays by Big Finish, demonstrating her continued engagement with the character.

Her career continued with diverse projects, including appearing in Greta Bellamacina’s 2019 film ‘Hurt by Paradise’ and participating in the ‘Trickster’ virtual live readings in 2020 to raise money for the NHS during the COVID-19 pandemic. More recently, Hopkins has been seen in a 2021 episode of the Sky Max series ‘Wolfe’ and the Hallmark Channel film ‘Jolly Good Christmas’ in 2022. She also has an upcoming role in the ITV series ‘The Long Shadow’ in 2023, playing Patricia Atkinson, showcasing her versatility across different genres and platforms. Her portrayal of Lily in the 2021 short film ‘Watchtower’ received a 9.2 rating, further highlighting her performance capabilities.
