Sophie Belinda Turner was born on February 21, 1996, in Northampton, England. She moved to Chesterton, Warwickshire, at the age of two and developed an early interest in acting, joining the Playbox Theatre Company when she was three years old. Her professional acting debut came in August 2009 when she was cast as Sansa Stark in the HBO fantasy series ‘Game of Thrones’. Filming began in July 2010, marking her first television role. Her drama teacher encouraged her to audition, and she adapted her appearance, dyeing her blonde hair auburn for the character. During her time on the show, Turner received a Young Artist Award nomination in 2012 for Best Performance in a TV Series – Supporting Young Actress.
In 2013, Turner expanded her career into film, taking on her first lead role in the independent thriller ‘Another Me’, based on Catherine MacPhail’s novel. That same year, she starred as Adeline March in the television film ‘The Thirteenth Tale’. She continued her film work with the action comedy ‘Barely Lethal’ in 2015, appearing alongside Hailee Steinfeld. A significant milestone in her career was portraying Jean Grey in the ‘X-Men’ film series, starting with ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ in 2016, a role she reprised in ‘Dark Phoenix’ in 2019. In addition to her acting, Turner has contributed to audiobooks, narrating Lev Grossman’s ‘The Girl in the Mirror’ and Cassandra Clare’s ‘City of Heavenly Fire’ in 2014.
