Sunil Chhetri was born on August 3, 1984, in Secunderabad, India. His early life was influenced by football, with his father playing for the Indian Army football team and his mother playing for the Nepal women’s national team. Chhetri began his professional career in 2002 with Mohun Bagan, where he spent three seasons before moving to JCT in 2005. During his time at JCT, he scored 21 goals in 48 appearances, showcasing his potential as a prolific forward. His performances led to him being named AIFF Player of the Year in 2007, marking an early recognition of his talent and dedication to the sport. He later played for East Bengal and Dempo, continuing to build his reputation in Indian football.
Chhetri’s career took an international turn when he signed with Major League Soccer side Kansas City Wizards in 2010, becoming the first Indian to play in the MLS. Although his stint in the USA was brief, it was a significant step for Indian football. He returned to India to play for Chirag United and Mohun Bagan again before moving to Sporting CP B in Portugal in 2012. After a loan spell with Churchill Brothers, where he helped the team win the I-League title in 2013, Chhetri joined Bengaluru FC, a new direct-entry I-League side. This move marked a pivotal point in his career, as he became the captain and led Bengaluru FC to multiple titles, including the I-League in their debut season (2013–14) and again in 2015–16. His leadership and goal-scoring prowess cemented his status as a legendary figure in Indian football.
Throughout his career, Chhetri has been instrumental in the success of the India national team. He led India to victories in the Nehru Cup (2007, 2009, 2012) and the SAFF Championship multiple times (2011, 2015, 2021, 2023). His most significant international achievement was leading India to win the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup, which qualified the team for the AFC Asian Cup after a 27-year absence. Chhetri’s individual accolades include a record seven AIFF Player of the Year awards and being the fourth-highest international goalscorer in men’s football. He received the Arjuna Award in 2011, the Padma Shri in 2019, and the Khel Ratna Award in 2021, India’s highest sporting honor, becoming the first footballer to achieve this. He briefly retired from international football in 2024 but made a comeback in 2025, further solidifying his commitment to the national team.
