David Lee “Tank” Abbott was born on April 26, 1965, in Huntington Beach, California. His early athletic endeavors included amateur wrestling, which he pursued from the age of nine through college, becoming a CCCAA All-American at Cypress College. He later attended California State University, Long Beach, where he earned a degree in history. Abbott also received boxing training from Noe Cruz at the Westminster Boxing Gym. Prior to his formal mixed martial arts career, he gained notoriety for his involvement in street fights.
Abbott commenced his professional mixed martial arts career in 1995, debuting at UFC 6 in July of that year. He quickly gained attention for his confrontational persona and powerful brawling style, notably knocking out John Matua in 18 seconds in his first fight. Throughout his initial run in the UFC from 1995 to 1998, Abbott participated in several tournaments, reaching the finals of UFC 6 and Ultimate Ultimate 1996. He faced prominent fighters such as Oleg Taktarov, Dan Severn, and Vitor Belfort. His career included engagements in Pride Fighting Championships, Strikeforce, EliteXC, and Cage Rage, along with a challenge for the UFC Heavyweight Championship in 1997. His fighting approach was characterized by heavy strikes and an aggressive stance, contributing to his status as a key figure in the early development of MMA.
After a period of retirement from MMA, Abbott returned to the sport in 2003, competing in UFC 41, UFC 43, and UFC 45. Following his second tenure with the UFC, he continued to participate in various promotions, including a rematch with Wesley Correira at Rumble on the Rock 7, where he secured a knockout victory in 2005. His career also extended to professional wrestling with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) from 1999 to 2000, where he developed a unique persona and storylines. He later engaged in a web series appearance and authored a novel titled *Bar Brawler*. In 2018, Abbott underwent a liver transplant due to health issues, surviving multiple strokes during the procedure.
