Thibaut Nicolas Marc Courtois was born on May 11, 1992, in Bree, Belgium. He began his football career with local club Bilzen V.V. as a left-back before transitioning to a goalkeeper at the age of seven when he joined Racing Genk in 1999. Courtois progressed through Genk’s youth system and made his senior debut for the club in 2009 at 16 years old. He quickly became the primary goalkeeper for Genk and played a pivotal role in their Belgian Pro League title victory in the 2010–11 season. During this season, he maintained 14 clean sheets across 40 league matches, conceding only 32 goals, and was recognized with the Goalkeeper of the Year award and Genk’s Player of the Year award.
In 2011, Courtois signed with Chelsea in a reported £8 million transfer. He was immediately loaned to Atlético Madrid, where he spent three successful seasons. During his tenure at Atlético, he secured a La Liga title, the Copa del Rey, the Europa League, and was a finalist in the UEFA Champions League. Upon his return to Chelsea in 2014, Courtois continued his trajectory of success, winning two Premier League titles and the EFL Cup. His consistent high-level performance led to his transfer to Real Madrid in 2018 for £35 million, making him La Liga’s most expensive goalkeeper at the time. With Real Madrid, he has achieved significant triumphs, including three La Liga titles and two UEFA Champions League titles.
Courtois made his senior international debut for Belgium in 2011 at the age of 19, becoming their youngest senior international goalkeeper. He has since earned over 100 caps for the national team, participating in multiple major tournaments. At the 2018 FIFA World Cup, he was awarded the Golden Glove for best goalkeeper, a testament to his critical role in Belgium’s third-place finish, their highest in the competition’s history. His career is distinguished by several individual accolades, including three Ricardo Zamora Trophies, the Premier League Golden Glove, and recognition as the third-best goalkeeper of the decade (2011–2020) by the IFFHS. He has consistently demonstrated exceptional shot-stopping ability, command of the penalty area, and strong leadership.
