Former Vice Chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Thomas Hoenig has more than forty years of experience in economics, central banking, commercial bank supervision and executive leadership. Throughout his career he identified problems and offered solutions to some of the biggest challenges facing the US economy and financial system, introducing specific proposals to reduce industry regulatory burden. In recognition of these efforts, he was presented the Independent Bankers of America’s Main Street Champion award in 2011.
Known as the “anti-inflammation hawk”, Hoenig began his career at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City in 1973 as an economist, leading its bank supervision and structure division, and in 1991 became its president. Here he directed the oversight of more than one thousand banks and bank holding companies with assets ranging from less than one million dollars to twenty billion. In 2012 he was selected to serve as the Vice Chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and held the role until 2018, ultimately becoming one of its most influential Vice Chairmen. While Vice Chairman, Hoenig simultaneously served as President of the International Association of Deposit Insurers from 2015 to 2017. His expertise led him to develop the Global Capital Index, a frequently cited, understandable comparison of the measurement of core capital levels of the largest banking firm’s banks across the globe. With years of first-hand experience in economic leadership, strategic planning, financial markets, monetary and economic policy and more, Hoenig speaks profoundly to audiences in North and South America, Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
