Marcus Luttrell

Marcus Luttrell was born in Houston, Texas, on November 7, 1975. His journey into military service began early, as he started training for the U.S. Navy SEALs at the age of 14 alongside his twin brother, Morgan. After completing high school at Willis High School, Luttrell attended Sam Houston State University before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in March 1999. He underwent rigorous training, including Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) Class 228, which he graduated from in April 2000, and further specialized training in combat medicine and communications.

Luttrell’s deployments included serving with SEAL Team 5 in Iraq during the 2003 invasion, where he participated in operations to counter resistance and search for WMDs. In 2005, he was deployed to Afghanistan with SEAL Team Ten as part of SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team One (SDV-1). During this deployment, he was involved in Operation Red Wings, a critical mission where his four-man Special Reconnaissance element was ambushed by Taliban fighters. Luttrell was the sole survivor of this intense engagement, sustaining severe injuries including fractures, a broken back, and numerous shrapnel wounds. He was eventually rescued with the assistance of a local Afghan villager, Mohammad Gulab, who provided shelter and protection from the Taliban.

In 2007, Luttrell was awarded the Navy Cross for his extraordinary heroism during Operation Red Wings. Following his recovery, he returned to full-duty and deployed to Ramadi during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006 with SEAL Team Five. Further injuries, including to his knees and spine, ultimately led to his medical discharge from the Navy in 2009. Luttrell went on to co-author the New York Times bestseller “Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10” (2007) and later “Service: A Navy SEAL at War” (2012). In 2010, he established the Lone Survivor Foundation, dedicated to supporting wounded warriors and their families.
