Todd Baratz’s journey into mental health began in Newton, Massachusetts, influenced by a challenging childhood marked by family dysfunction and his father’s disability. Introduced to therapy at a young age, he found significant support and a safe environment, particularly with a sex therapist he continues to see weekly. Growing up gay in a less accepting family context, he experienced depression, anxiety, and substance use issues during adolescence, which contributed to his decision to pursue his education in New York City.
He attended NYU’s Gallatin School, where he pursued an interdisciplinary study incorporating philosophy, psychology, anthropology, and medical philosophy. This academic foundation, combined with his personal therapeutic experiences, deepened his understanding of mental health and diverse perceptions of treatment. This period solidified his commitment to becoming a therapist himself. During graduate school, he worked as a therapist in inpatient hospital settings and community centers while simultaneously developing his private practice. He currently operates a group practice in New York City and Los Angeles, focusing on individual and couples therapy.
In 2021, Baratz launched his Instagram page, @yourdiagnonsense, which unexpectedly gained viral attention due to its relatable content and personal narratives. This led to the creation of the “Yourdiagnonsense” podcast, later renamed “Our Diagnonsense,” which he co-hosts with Ben Sidell. This platform aims to demystify psychological concepts and make mental health discussions more accessible. Recently, he authored his first book, “How to Love Someone Without Losing Your Mind,” which combines personal stories, client insights, and a critical examination of modern relationships. He is also a certified sex therapist.
