About

Born in Washington, D.C., on December 4, 1954, Tony Todd dedicated two years to studies at the University of Connecticut, which subsequently led to a scholarship at the esteemed Eugene O’Neill National Theatre Institute. This provided a foundational education that was further developed through intensive training at the Hartman Conservatory in Stamford, Connecticut, and the Trinity Square Repertory Theatre Conservatory in Providence, Rhode Island. During this initial period, Todd engaged in numerous classical and experimental theatrical productions. He also contributed to arts education by teaching playwriting to high school students within the Hartford public school system, demonstrating an early commitment to both performance and community engagement.

Todd’s career trajectory began with his debut in the 1986 fantasy film “Sleepwalk.” He quickly established himself as a versatile actor, appearing in significant films such as the Academy Award-winning “Platoon” (1986), “Bird” (1988), and “Lean on Me” (1989). A pivotal point in his career was his portrayal of Daniel Robitaille, the Candyman, in the 1992 film “Candyman,” a role he reprised multiple times across the franchise. This not only cemented his status as a horror icon but also showcased his ability to bring depth and nuance to complex characters. His filmography continued to expand with roles in “The Crow” (1994), “The Rock” (1996), and the “Final Destination” series (2000–2025), where he played William Bludworth.

Beyond his film work, Todd was a prominent figure in television and theater. He held recurring roles on “Boston Public” and guest-starred in popular series including “NYPD Blue,” “Smallville,” “Law & Order,” and “The X-Files.” His involvement in the “Star Trek” universe spanned multiple series, portraying characters like Kurn in “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” and an adult Jake Sisko in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.” On stage, he gained acclaim for originating the title role in August Wilson’s “King Hedley II,” earning a Helen Hayes nomination for his performance in Athol Fugard’s “The Captain’s Tiger.” Todd also lent his voice to numerous video games, including the Vortigaunts in the “Half-Life” series and Venom in “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” (2023). A dedicated artist, he continued working until shortly before his passing on November 6, 2024.
