Travis Fimmel was born on July 15, 1979, near Echuca, Victoria, Australia, and was raised on a 5500-acre cattle farm. His early life involved school and farm work. After high school, he briefly attended Melbourne University before moving to London. While bartending, he met David Seltzer, who encouraged him to pursue acting. Fimmel then moved to Los Angeles and began studying with acting coach Ivana Chubbuck. His early career included appearances in music videos for Janet Jackson and Jennifer Lopez in 2001. He secured the lead role in The WB series “Tarzan” in 2003, where he performed many of his own stunts. Despite the series being canceled, this marked the beginning of his acting endeavors.
Fimmel’s career progressed through various film and television projects. He appeared in films such as “Restraint” (2008), “Surfer, Dude” (2008) alongside Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and “Pure Country 2: The Gift” (2010). He co-starred with Patrick Swayze in A&E’s 2009 series “The Beast.” His breakthrough came with the role of Ragnar Lothbrok in the History Channel’s “Vikings” (2013–2017), a role for which he gained significant recognition. Following “Vikings,” Fimmel diversified his roles, starring as military commander Anduin Lothar in the film adaptation of “Warcraft” (2016) and as a quirky hipster in “Maggie’s Plan” (2015).
In recent years, Fimmel has balanced his film work with high-profile television projects. He starred in the HBO Max science fiction drama “Raised by Wolves” (2020–2022), directed by Ridley Scott, earning a Critics’ Choice Super Awards nomination. He also featured in the Australian Stan Original mini-series “Black Snow” (2022–2025), receiving an AACTA Awards nomination for Best Lead Actor in a Drama. Fimmel has continued to take on diverse roles, including in “Kandahar” (2023) and “Dune: Prophecy” (2024), demonstrating his versatility across various genres. Beyond acting, he co-founded the Australian beer brand Travla in 2022.
