Canada Vivian Bercovici is a legal expert and diplomat who served as Canada’s Ambassador to Israel, now a public speaker and consultant on international relations and technology.
Vivian is a senior fellow at the Jewish People Policy Institute in Jerusalem.
Vivian is an Executive Fellow with the University of Calgary School of Public Policy.
From 2007 to 2013, she was a partner with Heenan Blaikie LLP.
Recently, Ms. Bercovici was a partner at Dickinson Wright LLP.
She is also the Managing Director of Nuuvera Israel, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Toronto-based Nuuvera Corp.
Vivian Bercovici was born in 1961 and is a dual citizen of Canada and Israel. She pursued her education at various institutions, including the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1981-1982), York University, where she earned a BA in English and Political Science (1984), and the London School of Economics, obtaining a diploma in International Relations (1985). She completed her legal studies at the University of Toronto, receiving her LLB in 1988. Following her legal education, Bercovici embarked on a 24-year career practicing law in Toronto, specializing in media defense, financial regulatory work, and representing Canada in negotiations with First Nations. During this time, she also gained experience as a senior policy adviser in Ontario’s financial ministry for two years in the 1990s. Beyond her legal practice, Bercovici contributed to public discourse by writing a column on Israel-related issues for The Toronto Star and briefly serving as an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law from 2012 to 2013.
Her career took a diplomatic turn in 2014 when she was appointed Canada’s Ambassador to Israel by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. In this role, which she held until June 2016, Bercovici established herself as a commentator and leader on Israeli politics, foreign policy, and the business environment. After her ambassadorship concluded, she remained in Israel, residing in Tel Aviv. Bercovici has since been involved in private business ventures and public speaking engagements focused on the Middle East, particularly Israel. She also became a member of the Board of Directors of CBC News/Radio-Canada from 2013 to 2018 and a board member of the Canadian Journalism Foundation.
Currently, Vivian Bercovici serves as a senior fellow at the Jewish People Policy Institute in Jerusalem and an Executive Fellow with the University of Calgary School of Public Policy. She is the Managing Director of Nuuvera Israel, a cannabis company, and is the institutor and head editor of “State of Tel Aviv,” a weekly bulletin and podcast. She also continues to be a regular contributor to prominent publications such as The Jerusalem Post, National Post, and The Hub.
