Walton Sanders Goggins Jr. was born on November 10, 1971, in Birmingham, Alabama, and raised in Lithia Springs, Georgia. He began his acting career in his teens, securing a role in the procedural crime drama *In the Heat of the Night* (1989–1992) and in the 1990 television film *Murder in Mississippi*. After moving to Los Angeles at age nineteen, Goggins worked at LA Fitness and a valet service while pursuing acting, and met Ray McKinnon during the filming of *Murder in Mississippi*. Their collaboration led to the formation of Ginny Mule Pictures, a production company that earned an Academy Award for the short film *The Accountant* (2001), for which Goggins served as a co-producer and actor.
Goggins is known for his extensive work in television and film, often transforming for his roles. His notable television credits include portraying Shane Vendrell in the FX drama series *The Shield* (2002–2008), Boyd Crowder in the acclaimed series *Justified* (2010–2015), and Lee Russell in the HBO dark comedy *Vice Principals* (2016–2017). He also featured as Venus Van Dam in *Sons of Anarchy* for 6 episodes between 2012 and 2014. More recently, Goggins has taken on significant roles such as Baby Billy Freeman in *The Righteous Gemstones* (2019–2025), Cecil Stedman (voice) in *Invincible* (2021–2025), and Cooper Howard/The Ghoul in the Amazon Prime Video series *Fallout* (2024–present), for which he received a Primetime Emmy nomination.
