AAC West Division champion and winner of multiple coach of the year awards, Willie Fritz has served as Tulane University’s head football coach since the 2016 campaign. From 1997 through 2009, Fritz led the football programmes at University of Central Missouri, Sam Houston State University, and Georgia Southern University. From 2014 to 2015, he served as the head coach at Georgia Southern University. He oversaw the football programme at Blinn College, a junior college in Brenham, Texas, from 1993 to 1996. During that time, his teams won back-to-back NJCAA National Football Championships in 1994 and 1996.
On December 18, 2010, Willie Fritz was appointed the 14th football head coach at Sam Houston State University. Fritz led the Bearkats to the FCS’s first undefeated regular season and into the FCS playoffs in 2011, his second year at Sam Houston State University. In just three years as Sam Houston State’s head coach, he led the Bearkats to consecutive trips to the national championship game in 2011 and 2012.
Fritz started working as Georgia Southern University’s head football coach on January 10, 2014. The Eagles won the Sun Belt Conference’s undisputed championship in their inaugural FBS campaign, going 9-3 overall and 8-0 when playing other FBS teams. In their debut FBS season, they became the first team to go undefeated in conference play. After beating Bowling Green on December 23, 2015, Fritz guided the Eagles to an 8-4 record and their first bowl berth in the GoDaddy Bowl. ESPN reported on December 11, 2015, that Fritz would take over as the 39th football coach to lead Tulane University. At Tulane, he has won the 2018 Cure Bowl and the 2019 Armed Forces Bowl, as well as the AAC West Division championship in 2018.
