Zach Skow is an American animal welfare campaigner and prison reform activist. On Instagram he has 114k followers and is based in Kern County in California. He is famous for turning his life around from a dark situation; Zach had abused himself with drugs and alcohol from being a teenager. At the age of just 28 he was diagnosed with end stage liver disease, at that time he used alcohol to numb himself to face the world.
In 2008 Zach knew he needed to find the resolve to transform himself.
He had developed an empathy with rescue dogs; he knew what it was like to feel un-wanted and the dogs could help him find a meaning to life. He decided to work to take on the tough cases – aggressive and scared dogs. In 2009 he founded Marley’s Mutts, a not for profit organisation and he has worked to educate and teach people that it is the circumstances and training of the dogs that has caused the problem. They provide training resources for owners and support for dog owners in the community.
During the pandemic they dropped off dog food to give help to struggling families.
With a dedication to community outreach Zach has developed a programme to help prison inmates. It is called the Pawsitive Change Program. Inmates gain skills as dog trainers and rescue therapy dogs give comfort. His hope is to expand his programs to help addicts and people with mental health problems. Zach has a healthy lifestyle, which has healed his liver and he is now a loving husband and father, as well as an inspiration to many people.
