TIAA’s chief executive explains how her father’s story shapes the way she leads, in a film for Range Rover’s leadership series with Bloomberg.
“Leadership is about connection.” With those words, Thasunda Brown Duckett opens her film for Range Rover’s Drive to Lead series. As President and CEO of TIAA, she leads around 15,000 associates worldwide. Over two minutes, however, she shows that her leadership story starts far from the boardroom.
The series profiles leaders who reflect the qualities Range Rover wants to stand for. In the brand’s words, “Leadership today requires steadfast passion, a strong sense of integrity and a commitment to excellence.” Duckett opens the line-up, alongside entrepreneur Rande Gerber, NBA Hall of Famer Grant Hill, champion skier Lindsey Vonn and beauty founder Bobbi Brown. Range Rover also runs the series on Bloomberg.
MN2S secured Duckett for the campaign, putting a leader with a powerful personal story in front of a brand built for achievers.
Inside Thasunda Brown Duckett’s Drive to Lead Film
The emotional core of the film is her father. “My dad, Otis Brown, he was working over 30 years at a company and never contributed $1 to his 401k plan,” she explains.
That memory now guides every decision she makes. “Every leadership capacity that I am in, you never forget the Otis Browns,” she says. For Duckett, real benefit means “connecting to the person furthest removed from the CEO.” Given that TIAA helps millions of Americans plan for retirement, the story carries real weight.
Vision matters just as much. “When you are setting a vision, people have to see themselves in it,” she says. She also sees leadership as bigger than business. “Making impact as a leader is not just running companies. It’s purpose.”
Duckett speaks openly about the roles she carries beyond TIAA. “I am a philanthropist, a mother. All of those things I carry with me no matter where I go.” Her philanthropy honours the same family story: she founded and chairs the Otis and Rosie Brown Foundation, named after her parents.
The film closes on legacy. “My drive to lead is purpose,” she says. “I want people to feel that Thasunda wasn’t just here to make sure that we had a great company. She made me a better person.”

Why Duckett Is a Natural Fit for Range Rover
Few executives combine Duckett’s authority with her openness. She became TIAA’s President and CEO in May 2021. At the time, she was one of only two Black women leading a Fortune 500 company, according to Fortune. Range Rover’s series also highlights that she is the first woman to lead TIAA.
Her career before TIAA is just as strong. She served as CEO of Chase Consumer Banking and Chase Auto Finance at JPMorgan Chase. Today, TIAA manages more than $1.5 trillion in assets, as Fortune reported in June. She also sits on the board of Nike.
Crucially, the brand fits into her story naturally. “My Range Rover is where I get to really have some beautiful quiet moments on my way from A to B,” she says. “It’s a reminder of not missing the moment.” Instead of a hard sell, the car appears as a place to reflect, which is exactly how luxury should feel.
Why Range Rover Speaks to Leaders
Range Rover has long built its brand around leadership culture. For example, it marked the debut of its latest flagship model with a Range Rover Leadership Summit in Los Angeles in 2021.
The brand’s positioning has only sharpened since then. In 2023, JLR reorganised into a house of brands, with Range Rover as its flagship of modern luxury. Many of its customers lead businesses of their own. Drive to Lead therefore reflects the people the brand already serves.
The guest line-up shows real range, too. Duckett brings finance, Hill brings sport and investment, and Vonn brings resilience. Similarly, Gerber and Brown bring entrepreneurial vision. Together, they present leadership as a mindset rather than a job title.
What Bloomberg Brings to the Partnership
Bloomberg Media reaches business decision-makers worldwide across digital, video, audio and live events. As a result, it gives Range Rover direct access to senior professionals who already trust the platform.
The setting suits Duckett as well. Bloomberg’s audience understands the scale of her role. Consequently, her message about leading for the person furthest from the CEO lands with the people best placed to act on it.
The Rise of the CEO as Brand Talent
Drive to Lead reflects a wider shift in talent marketing. Audiences have grown wary of polished endorsements. Brands therefore look for voices with lived experience and earned authority.
Business leaders deliver exactly that. A sitting CEO brings real stories about pressure, purpose and long-term thinking. In addition, they reach high-value audiences that celebrity campaigns often miss. Senior professionals tend to trust peers over personalities.
The format matters just as much. Short documentary films give leaders room to share real insight rather than a scripted line. The brand earns attention through value, not volume.
What This Means for Executive Talent Marketing
Duckett’s film offers a clear lesson for luxury and financial brands. Credibility now works as a currency in its own right. Moreover, the strongest partnerships rest on shared values rather than reach alone.
Range Rover stands for refinement and achievement. Bloomberg stands for insight and influence. Duckett brings purpose, connection and a story rooted in her father’s experience. When those elements align, a campaign feels earned rather than bought.
For brands exploring executive talent partnerships, the takeaway is simple. Choose leaders whose values match your own, then give them space to tell their story.
