DJ pioneer Grandmaster Flash has received a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Bronx Museum of the Arts.
Hip-Hop legend Grandmaster Flash was born and raised in South Bronx, New York, and now his community is honouring him with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Presented at the Bronx Museum of the Arts Spring Gala & Auction at the Conrad, New York, the award recognises Grandmaster Flash’s extensive contribution to music and to Hip-Hop culture in general.
The Gala was chaired by writer and director Baz Luhrmann, who worked with Flash on the hit Netflix series The Get Down, which was heavily inspired by Grandmaster Flash, and the early Hip-Hop scene he emerged in. The Bronx Museum of the Arts recognised Flash’s importance to the show, which they point out is filmed in their own neighbourhood.
Also this week, Grandmaster Flash paid a visit to the University of Arizona to give a lecture about turntablism, a live demonstration, and to critique some live performances by up and coming student DJs.
Discussing Grandmaster Flash’s visit, the University’s Dean of Humanities said: “Hip-hop has become an all-pervasive key component of contemporary American and international society, culture and identity.” The event closed the Africana Studies Program’s Black History Month celebrations.
