Davis aka HZ, Founder of Zero Zero Recordings and Music | MN2S

Osaka DJ, producer and radio host Davis aka HZ launches Zero Zero Recordings, opening with an upgraded version of the track where his story began.

Davis aka HZ is an Osaka-based DJ, producer, label owner and radio host, now in his eighth year behind the decks. His journey into electronic music started on the staff of Osaka nightclub Earth Hall. Today his sound leans minimal, dark and atmospheric. Alongside his label Hz Recordings and its techno-focused club nights, he hosts Davis’s Room on Osaka internet station Honmaru Radio. In 2026 he founded Zero Zero Recordings, which launches with a remastered version of his debut track “Neon Mirage 2” and is working with MN2S Label Services on international distribution and promotion.

How did you get into music? What is your musical background?

Davis found electronic music through the nightlife itself. Working as a staff member at Earth Hall, a nightclub in Osaka, introduced him to club culture and electronic dance music. That experience eventually inspired him to step behind the decks and start producing.

Eight years on, he plays out once or twice a month. Every two to three months he also throws his own parties. These include Hz Recordings Night, a techno event under his first label, and Amemura Blend, an all-genre night in Osaka.

Hz Recordings and Davis’s Room

Hz Recordings is the label Davis built to connect Japanese and international artists through releases, DJ events and radio. In a recent interview with 6AM, he explained that the name comes from the unit of frequency, reflecting his interest in how sound affects emotion.

He also hosts Davis’s Room, a show on Honmaru Radio’s Naniwa Station, an underground internet radio station in Osaka. The show introduces artists from around the world to listeners in Japan. Davis says it has reached No. 1 in Honmaru Radio’s nationwide programme rankings, with episodes featuring international artists also topping the chart. For him, those results show a growing appetite in Japan for international electronic music and independent artists.

Tell us about your first release and what was special about that one.

His very first release was “Neon Mirage 2”, which came out in 2025 on Hz Recordings. There was no complicated story behind it. “I simply loved the track instinctively,” he says. “Sometimes, music is about trusting your intuition, and this track felt right to me.”

And yes, there is an original “Neon Mirage”. It hasn’t been released yet, but Davis plans to share it in the future. As for the “2”, he keeps it simple: it literally means number two.

Tell us about the latest project you worked on.

His latest project is the launch of Zero Zero Recordings. The label opens with “Neon Mirage 2” as its first release, catalogue number ZZR001, out on 6 November 2026. Ahead of release, the track premieres on 6AM on 22 October 2026.

This isn’t a straight reissue. Davis has remastered the track, increasing its loudness and impact. He compares it to the Gundam Mk-II from the Japanese anime series: an upgraded version of the original. Because the track is relatively short, he wants listeners to hear it almost as an opening theme, an introduction to the world of Zero Zero Recordings.

The production itself was a little unusual. Davis normally works with grooveboxes and other electronic equipment. On this track, he recorded sounds such as a microphone being tapped, then transformed them into something new. “I enjoy experimenting with sounds and finding unexpected ways to create something interesting,” he says.

Why “Zero Zero”?

The label’s name carries its philosophy. Zero stands for nothingness, the starting point of all creation. Two zeros together suggest infinity, the limitless possibilities of music. Hence the label’s motto: “From Nothing to Infinity. From Osaka to the World.”

Could you describe your musical style and creative vision?

Davis describes his sound as mostly minimal, dark and atmospheric. He doesn’t want to be boxed into a single style, though. He is always looking to bring in new elements and keep his sound evolving.

Osaka’s club and underground scene has played a big part in that. Being involved in it has exposed him to many styles of electronic music and connected him with other DJs and artists. Zero Zero Recordings reflects the same outlook. It focuses on techno, minimal, acid and electronic music, while leaving room for creative freedom beyond established boundaries.

What Zero Zero listens for

When demos come in, Davis looks for two things. First, the groove has to feel right and fit the direction of the label. Second, he wants to hear the artist’s own strengths and musical identity. A track with both, he says, is one he is very interested in.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking of entering the music industry?

“Keep making great music and don’t hesitate to send it out!” Davis says. He has a soft spot for tracks with cool, memorable phrases and musical ideas. His message to new artists is to keep creating and sharing anything they believe in. He’d love to hear more exciting music from upcoming producers.

What are your plans for the rest of the year and beyond?

After ZZR001, Zero Zero Recordings has releases planned from DJ Armin Touran, DJ MannyManny and Ekis Ekis. Ekis Ekis, an Argentine producer who has charted on Beatport across multiple genres, has already released music through one of Davis’s labels.

Davis is also planning Zero Zero Recordings events and label showcases, bringing the roster together in front of audiences. For his upcoming DJ dates, follow his Instagram.

DJing, production, running labels and radio all come back to one passion for Davis: discovering great music and sharing it with people around the world.
