Writing, playing, and producing everything himself, he single-handedly channels the spirit and sound of 1990s grunge and alternative, distilling their finest elements into songs that sound ripe for success in the 2020s. Natelle’s induction into rock music came at the age of 14, when he heard the unmistakable battering-ram riff of AC/DC’s ‘Back in Black’ in the film Iron Man. “As soon as I heard that, I was like, ‘Wow, I want to do that. Whatever that is, I want to do that.’” he recalls. “And from then on, I spent every hour I had practising music and not going to school.”
Forsaking his formal education to devote himself to his art explains why Natelle is also largely self-taught as a musician. Like many of rock’s most imaginative creatives, he’s a natural autodidact—with an equally natural wariness of learning the “proper” ways of writing and producing music. Riding the tech boom that has empowered more and more independent musicians to craft professional-level recordings in their bedroom, Natelle has put his all-round talents to good use, absorbing influences both contemporary (indie singer-songwriter Dominic Fike) and classic (Nirvana, The Beatles) and then reflecting them back out through his own innate sense of melody and musical dynamics. He has released one single to date, ‘Who are You?’, which comes on like a gem inexplicably left off the first Foo Fighters album. And just like that album—on which Dave Grohl played everything—the song is the perfect showcase for Natelle’s multifaceted talents as a writer, guitarist, bassist, drummer, arranger, and producer
When the equally questioning ‘Why?’ drops, it’s doubtless going to further his cause, appealing to both millennials nostalgic for the hard-but-melodic riffs of Nineties guitar music and their Gen Z successors who are retooling the best bits of that musical golden age to suit their own times. Natelle’s decision to join forces with MN2S to promote his latest release is as shrewd as it is exciting. Like any young independent creative worth their salt, he knows that it takes more than just music to get heard right now. It means getting online and engaging with your audience. And that involves socials, content and algorithms, often the last things a musician wants to think about when their mind’s buzzing with ideas for new songs.
Collaborating with us is therefore allowing Natelle to spend more time on the most important thing about being a musician—i.e. music—while we focus on the things we love doing: working with artists across all genres to help them connect with their audience through bespoke content plans, broader reach, and playlist placements.
