Label Spotlight: Recognition. | MN2S

Recognition., a dynamic South African label based out of Johannesburg, has teamed up with MN2S Label Services to elevate the international visibility of its roster.

This collaboration marks an exciting chapter for Recognition., known for championing diverse talents spanning genres like amapiano and kasi rap. The partnership will provide global distribution and marketing support, offering Recognition.’s artists such as 888Goofy, Big Body Bones, and Franklyn Anderson the opportunity to expand their creative horizons worldwide. With MN2S’s expansive network and industry expertise, Recognition. aims to amplify its emerging artists’ reach and further cement its place in the global music scene.

How did you get into music originally?

My musical journey began at age 8, volunteering under Cristo Hattingh (my mentor and later lecturer) at my church’s sound team. Early influences like Queen’s Killer Queen sparked my passion, and by 2021, I created my first full project, Thoughtless Flow, while juggling final matric exams. This work blended Taoist philosophy (“wu wei”) with my Christian faith, emphasizing natural creative flow. Collaborations with mentors like Denzel Jones (D-Dawg) and Maleeq Varela later deepened my understanding of South Africa’s music industry.

How long has your label been in operation?

Recognition formally launched in May 2024 as a rebrand of Black Flag Media Group, which I founded at 18 in 2022. What began as a solo venture evolved into a collaborative network, partnering with entities like Perky$ins Entertainment, Take It Ez Records, and Mad Tape. Today, Recognition operates as a collective of creatives, spanning labels, management agencies, and branding firms, unified under a shared vision. We work across genres—from amapiano to kasi rap—ensuring our artists resonate globally, including dominating platforms like TikTok.

Thoughtless Flow (2021), released under my alias Franklyn Anderson, started as a two-track single (Sunset Start and Moon Light Arrival). After feedback from a close friend, it expanded into a full project themed on resilience and natural flow. I handled composition, mixing, and mastering independently—a DIY ethos that still guides our artist-centric approach.

Recently, we rebranded and released Big Body Bones’ (FKA LAUADABLE) EP I Really Need the Attention Today, which has gained momentum in Johannesburg. Other highlights include HBX’s Chosen One and WN-ZAYVIE’s It’s Me. Upcoming releases feature Santana’s lead single (out April 18 via MN2S), 888goofy’s collaboration with WestsideXty, and King Streets’ 4.

Could you sum up your label’s philosophy and creative vision?

“Your Music, Your Rights, Recognised.” We prioritize artist empowerment, advocating for fair deals, radio placements, and global visibility. Recognition bridges local talent and international platforms, driven by grassroots advocacy and creative collaboration.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking of setting up their own imprint?

“Just do it.” Action trumps hesitation. Whether you succeed or stumble, the experience is invaluable. My journey—from mixing tracks in borrowed studios to managing a global catalog—proves persistence pays.

What are your plans for the rest of the year and beyond?

2024/25 focuses on cementing Recognition as a household name in South Africa. Key releases include Santana’s May project, 888goofy’s amapiano collaborations, and WN-ZAYVIE’s EP. Long-term, we aim to expand our global footprint, with MN2S playing a pivotal role in bridging local artistry to international audiences.

What have you enjoyed about working with MN2S?

MN2S’s global reach aligns seamlessly with our mission to elevate artists beyond borders. The upcoming Santana single (April 18) exemplifies this synergy. Working with a team that understands our vision has been invaluable—truly a partnership built on mutual recognition.
