UK singer-songwriter Estelle played a prominent part in Channel 4’s brand new documentary Prince: Last Year of a Legend.
The documentary detailed the last 12 months of Prince’s life, drawing on archive footage, fan video recordings and interviews with close friends and collaborators.
Estelle discussed Prince’s genius in general terms towards the beginning of the documentary, before detailing her appearance at Prince’s Baltimore benefit concert, which the artist held to raise money and awareness after unarmed citizen Freddie Gray became the latest victim of US police brutality.
Estelle recalled how, after watching Prince’s characteristically long set for over two hours, she figured she would not be called on to perform. Then, out of nowhere, she was summoned to the stage for a duet of ‘Purple Rain’. This became, tragically, be one of Prince’s final performances of his signature song.
