Everyone loves a rebel – someone who refuses to conform to the mainstream. But why do we love rebels? Well, they’re exciting, they often have a different perspective and they’re sure to be interesting.
When you’re booking a celebrity, someone with a bit of a rebellious streak could do wonders for your event. Whether you want to sell tickets or sell a product, a celebrity with a non-conformist streak is sure to bring out the voyeur in your audience.
And that’s just what Sarah Goodhart is – the outspoken former star of Geordie Shore spoke out last year about downsides of reality TV for its participants. Although it must be a view held by many who have found fame on reality shows, it’s one that’s rarely vocalised – which is what makes Sarah Goodhart so unusual.
She filmed an eighteen-minute long video about her experiences on the show, which she uploaded to her own YouTube channel.
In the video, she blasts Geordie Shore producers, accusing them of, “Taking broken people and thrusting them into a negative environment where the drama is encouraged.” She describes the reality TV industry as a whole as corrupt and says that being on the show pushed her almost to breaking point.
In the video, Sarah opens up about the mental health conditions she believes should have precluded her from ever appearing on the show. She said: “I’m downright depressed. I should never have been in that environment in the first place but I’ve got no money.”
It’s not just her emotional health that Sarah accuses showrunners of damaging though; she also claims to have been denied access to important anemia medication for three days, because of the show’s hectic filming schedule.
Her willingness to speak out about the dark underbelly of reality TV makes her an outlier, and fellow castmates have defended the show. Scotty T said that being on the show wasn’t for the faint of heart: “It’s like with me, people might think I’m a dick, which they probably do, and I just didn’t care. She takes it to heart but that’s only because she’s new to the whole thing, she would take one little thing and like read into it then once you start reading into it, you let it get the better of you and it takes over you.”
Sarah is sure to be a hit with young audiences, and her stand against Geordie Shore has helped her to cultivate an image of a strong, independent woman who would make a great motivational speaker.
