808 State, an English electronic music group, formed in Manchester in 1987. The group was founded by Graham Massey, Martin Price, and Gerald Simpson, taking their name from the Roland TR-808 drum machine and the collective mindset of its members. Their debut album, “Newbuild”, was released in September 1988. The group achieved commercial recognition in 1989 with their song “Pacific State,” which received airplay on BBC Radio 1 and charted for 11 weeks in the UK. This success contributed to their influence on the developing acid house scene in the UK.
The group’s early work, particularly “Newbuild,” significantly impacted the Madchester and baggy scenes. Following the success of “Pacific State,” Gerald Simpson departed in 1989 to pursue a solo career as A Guy Called Gerald. The remaining members continued with collaborations, including with rapper MC Tunes on the 1990 album “The North at Its Heights,” which reached number 26 on the UK Albums Chart. Their 1991 album, “ex:el,” featured vocal contributions from Bernard Sumner and Björk, and included hit singles like “In Yer Face” (UK number 9), “Cubik” (UK number 10), and “Lift” (UK number 38). In October 1991, Martin Price left the group.
After Price’s departure, 808 State undertook remix work for artists such as David Bowie and Soundgarden. They released “Don Solaris” in 1996, featuring James Dean Bradfield on “Lopez,” which peaked at number 20 on the UK Singles Chart. Further collaborations included Mike Doughty on “Bond” and Lou Rhodes on “Azura.” The group released “Outpost Transmission” in 2003, featuring guest collaborations with Alabama 3 and Guy Garvey from Elbow. Andy Barker, a core member, passed away in November 2021, leaving Graham Massey as the sole remaining original member of the group.
