Saul Milton (Chase) and Will Kennard (Status) formed Chase & Status in 2003 after meeting at university in Manchester. Milton studied English and Humanities at Manchester Metropolitan University, while Kennard pursued History of Art at the University of Manchester before dedicating himself to music. Their early work, influenced by The Prodigy and Orbital, quickly gained support from BBC Radio 1Xtra, with “Love’s Theme” being played in 2004. Between 2007 and 2009, they achieved three number one singles on the UK Dance Singles Chart, including “Hurt You” / “Sell Me Your Soul” and “Take Me Away” / “Judgement (Informer).” Their track, “Pieces,” featuring Plan B, reached number 70 on the UK Singles Chart in 2008, followed by “Against All Odds” with Kano in 2009, which peaked at number 45.
The duo’s career trajectory accelerated significantly with their second studio album, “No More Idols,” released in 2011. The album debuted at number two on the UK Albums Chart and was certified gold in its first week. Notable singles from this period include “End Credits” (2009) and “Let You Go” (2010), both entering the UK Singles Chart Top 40, along with “Blind Faith,” “Time,” “Hitz,” and “Flashing Lights.” Beyond their own releases, Chase & Status have a production portfolio that includes work for Rihanna on albums “Rated R,” “Talk That Talk,” and “Unapologetic,” as well as producing Rita Ora’s UK number one hit “R.I.P.” and collaborating on tracks for Example and Alexandra Burke.
More recently, Chase & Status achieved further commercial success with their album “2 Ruff, Vol. 1,” which saw four singles simultaneously in the UK Top 40 in 2023–24. They secured their first Brit Award for “Producer of the Year” in 2024 and a UK number one single with “Backbone,” a collaboration with Stormzy. The duo continues to tour extensively, with performances at major festivals like Download Festival, Roskilde Festival, Reading Festival, and Global Gathering, demonstrating their enduring presence and adaptability within the electronic music landscape.
