Coca-Cola commissioned DJ Scratch to produce and feature in their first DJ commercial, titled '3 DJs.' This partnership demonstrated his commercial appeal and recognized his status as a prominent figure in the DJ community.
As of 2022, DJ Scratch hosts 'The DJ Scratch Show' on LL Cool J’s Rock The Bells Radio, a station available on Sirius XM. In this role, he curates and presents a mix show featuring classic hip-hop, highlighting his expertise and influence within the genre.
George Spivey, known professionally as DJ Scratch, was born on June 21, 1968, in Brooklyn, New York. His career as a hip-hop DJ and producer began in 1985. A pivotal moment in his early career was winning the New Music Seminar Battle For World Supremacy DJ championship in 1988. He gained significant recognition after being introduced to EPMD by Jam Master Jay, becoming their official DJ by their 1989 album “Unfinished Business.” His distinct cutting and scratching techniques played a crucial role in EPMD’s sound, and he also contributed as a producer on tracks like “Funky Piano” and “Rampage” from their 1990 album “Business As Usual.”
Following EPMD’s temporary separation, DJ Scratch established himself as a prominent producer, working with numerous notable artists. He produced tracks for Busta Rhymes’ 1996 debut album “The Coming” and continued to collaborate with artists such as 50 Cent, LL Cool J, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, DMX, The Roots, and Q-Tip. His production credits include 19 albums certified Gold and seven certified Platinum in the United States, underscoring his impact on the commercial success of hip-hop music. He was also the resident DJ for television shows like ‘Hip Hop Hold Em”, Fox 5’s ‘Uptown Comedy Club’, and B.E.T.’s ‘Rap City: The Basement’, showcasing his versatility across different media platforms.
Throughout his career, DJ Scratch has received consistent industry recognition for his turntablism skills. He won the Master of the Mix competition in 2010 and was named Global Spin Awards’ “Turntablist of the Year” in 2012, 2013, and 2014. His work has also earned Grammy nominations for artists like Busta Rhymes and The Roots. Beyond his musical endeavors, DJ Scratch appeared in films such as “Juice,” “The Original 50 Cent,” “Backstage,” “Fly By Night,” “Rhyme & Reason,” and Spike Lee’s “Bamboozled,” and was commissioned by Coca-Cola for their “3 DJs” commercial. In 2016, he assisted A Tribe Called Quest on their final album, “We Got It from Here… Thank You 4 Your Service,” filling in for Ali Shaheed Muhammad. As of 2022, he hosts “The DJ Scratch Show” on LL Cool J’s Rock The Bells Radio on Sirius XM, curating classic hip-hop mixes.
