Eric Scott Melvin, born on July 9, 1966, in Hollywood, is an American musician recognized as a co-founder of the punk rock band NOFX. Since its inception in 1983, Melvin and Fat Mike have been the only consistent members, solidifying Melvin’s role in the band’s enduring presence on the punk scene. His contributions to NOFX include guitar work and backup vocals, notably crafting the guitar riffs for songs such as the intro to “Leave It Alone.” Melvin’s distinct vocal style, known as the “Mel Yell,” has become a recognizable element of NOFX’s sound. Beyond his primary role with NOFX, Melvin has cultivated a diverse career that includes being a founding member of Punk Rock Karaoke and an intermittent touring member of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. He is also a co-founder of The Arts Factory.
In recent years, Melvin has expanded his professional scope, venturing into personal development as a transformative life coach. This transition reflects a broader interest in human potential and well-being, complementing his long-standing musical career. In 2023, he launched his solo project, Melvinator, releasing the debut album *The Rise of the Melvinator*. This album featured EDM-infused re-recordings of NOFX songs, produced by Fat Mike and released through Fat Wreck’s imprint, Bottles to the Ground. This project demonstrated Melvin’s willingness to explore new musical directions while maintaining connections to his punk rock roots. His personal life includes his marriage to Australian artist Sarah Melvin in 2016, with whom he has identical twin daughters. He also has two sons from previous relationships, Eli and Caspian Melvin, and resides in the Encinitas area of Southern California. Melvin, who was raised Jewish, also resonates with Buddhist and Taoist philosophies and practices meditation, breath work, and yoga.
Melvin’s career with NOFX spans decades and includes numerous albums released on labels like Fat Wreck Chords, Epitaph, and Mystic. Notable albums featuring his work include *Punk in Drublic* (1994), *Heavy Petting Zoo* (1996), *Pump Up the Valuum* (2000), and more recent releases such as *Single Album* (2021) and *Double Album* (2022). His independent spirit is evident in NOFX’s long-standing decision to never sign with a major label. This decision underlines a commitment to creative autonomy throughout his career.
