About

Goldfrapp, formed in London in 1999, is an English electronic music duo comprising Alison Goldfrapp on vocals and synthesizer, and Will Gregory on synthesizer. Their debut studio album, “Felt Mountain,” released in September 2000, garnered favorable reviews and was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize in 2001. This initial offering showcased Alison Goldfrapp’s vocals over cinematic soundscapes, drawing influences from cabaret, folk, and electronic music. Despite its critical success, the album did not achieve high commercial chart positions upon release.

The duo’s sound evolved significantly with their second album, “Black Cherry,” released in April 2003. This album incorporated glam rock and synth-pop elements, leading to increased dance-oriented sounds. “Black Cherry” achieved UK chart success, peaking at number 19 on the UK Albums Chart, and produced the successful single “Strict Machine,” which reached number one on the US Hot Dance Club Play chart in 2003 and won an Ivor Novello Award for “Best Dance Single” in 2004. This progression continued with their third album, “Supernature,” released in August 2005, which further embraced dance music and achieved international chart success, debuting at number two on the UK Albums Chart and earning a Grammy Award nomination for Best Electronic/Dance Album in 2007.

Goldfrapp continued to explore diverse musical styles, with their fourth album, “Seventh Tree” (2008), emphasizing ambient and downtempo music. Their fifth album, “Head First” (2010), marked a return to a more dance-oriented, 1980s-influenced synth-pop sound, earning another Grammy Award nomination for Best Electronic/Dance Album in 2011. Subsequent albums, “Tales of Us” (2013) and “Silver Eye” (2017), showcased folktronica and a return to their electronic roots, respectively. The duo has been on an indefinite hiatus since 2022, with Alison Goldfrapp pursuing solo projects.
