Icona Pop, comprised of Aino Jawo (born July 7, 1986) and Caroline Hjelt (born November 8, 1987), formed in Stockholm in 2009. The duo met at a party and began writing music together, quickly developing a sound that combined classical pop melodies with electronic drums and synths. This distinct style earned them early recognition, with publications like NME, The Guardian, and Rolling Stone praising their work, particularly their debut single “Manners” in 2011.
The duo’s career saw significant progression with the release of “I Love It” in 2012, a track that gained international traction and was featured in various media, including video games, television shows, and commercials. This success led to performances at major festivals, a tour across the United States, and recognition at the Billboard Music Awards. They continued to release music, including albums like “This Is… Icona Pop” (2013) and singles such as “Girlfriend” (2013) and “All Night” (2013), further establishing their presence in the electronic dance music scene.
From 2014 onwards, Icona Pop engaged in collaborations with artists like Tiësto and Cobra Starship, and served as opening acts for tours by Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus. Their 2015 single “Emergency” topped the Billboard Dance Chart, and they released the EP “Emergency” that same year. They have consistently released new music, including “Girls Girls” (2017) and “Next Mistake” (2019), and signed a label deal with Ultra Music, demonstrating sustained activity and evolution in their musical output. Their latest album, “Club Romantech,” was released in 2023, showcasing their continued artistic development along with voice acting roles in the “Trolls” film series.
