Lo Moon is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California, that formed with lead singer Matt Lowell, bassist and keyboardist Crisanta Baker, and guitarist Samuel Stewart. Prior to forming the band, Matt Lowell began writing songs in New York City with the intention of creating a band. After relocating to Los Angeles, he encountered Crisanta Baker and shared a demo of “Loveless,” which led to her joining the group. Shortly thereafter, Samuel Stewart, son of David A. Stewart of Eurythmics and Siobhan Fahey of Bananarama, joined as guitarist. The band’s early practice sessions took place in Lowell’s backyard shed.
The demo for “Loveless,” which Lowell started writing in 2012, garnered attention from Columbia Records, leading to a record deal for Lo Moon. In September 2016, the band officially released “Loveless” as their debut single, produced by Chris Walla and François Tétaz. Following its release, Lo Moon performed a series of live shows and embarked on a tour in early 2017. They continued to release new music, including the single “This Is It” in May 2017, which later peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Adult Alternative Songs chart in January 2018. Lo Moon’s self-titled debut album was released on February 23, 2018, via Columbia Records, with production credits from Chris Walla and François Tétaz. The band has since released two more albums, “A Modern Life” in 2022 and “I Wish You Way More Than Luck” in 2024, both under Thirty Tigers / The Orchard or Strngr Recordings. Drummer Sterling Laws, initially a touring member, became a full band member in November 2018 before his departure in July 2024.
Throughout their career, Lo Moon has performed at notable music festivals such as the Governors Ball Music Festival in New York City (June 2017) and Lollapalooza in Chicago (August 2017). They have also supported various artists on tour, including Glass Animals (August 2017), Ride (September 2017), Phoenix (October 2017), and London Grammar (October 2017). In September 2017, Lo Moon was recognized as one of three acts in NPR’s inaugural Slingshot emerging artist series. The band has headlined shows at venues like the Troubadour in Los Angeles and Rough Trade NYC. Their music has been featured on television, with performances of “This Is It” and “Loveless” on Jimmy Kimmel Live in January 2018.
