April Harper Grey, professionally known as Underscores, was born on April 21, 2000, in San Francisco, California. Growing up, she developed an interest in filmmaking and composing music, drawing influences from artists such as Jack White, Beck, and Madonna. Her early musical journey began at age 13, releasing dubstep music on SoundCloud under the moniker Underscores. She initially focused on the sound design possibilities within the dubstep genre, later expanding her style to incorporate various influences after becoming bored with traditional templates. Grey’s foundational experiences include creating films with iMovie, running a YouTube channel featuring Minecraft Let’s Plays, and experimenting with GarageBand. In high school, she further developed her musical understanding as a jazz-band member, focusing on music theory. She also explored Midwest emo and math rock during this period, broadening her artistic palette.
Underscores transitioned from releasing individual tracks to EPs, starting with the jazz-EDM project “Skin Purifying Treatment” in 2018, which marked her first foray into lyrical writing. This was followed by “We Never Got Strawberry Cake” in 2019 and “Character Development!” in 2020. Her debut album, “Fishmonger,” released in March 2021, gained wider recognition. Recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic at her parents’ home, the album notably integrated guitar into every track despite her lack of prior experience with the instrument. “Fishmonger” received critical acclaim, appearing on lists from The Atlantic and The Line of Best Fit, and attracted the attention of artists like Travis Barker of Blink-182. A companion EP, “Boneyard AKA Fearmonger,” was released in December 2021, featuring collaborations with Barker and Brakence, exploring themes of existential dread and apocalyptic settings.
Following the success of “Fishmonger” and its companion EP, Underscores embarked on her first headlining mini-tour in early 2022 and performed at Lollapalooza. The “Fishmonger” era concluded in January 2023 with the release of “Count of Three (You Can Eat $#@!).” In 2023, she announced her second album, “Wallsocket,” which was released on September 22, 2023, via the Mom + Pop record label. “Wallsocket” was promoted with multiple singles, an alternate reality game, and a North American and European tour. The album is a concept project set in fictional Wallsocket, Michigan, exploring themes of gun violence, trans identity, and corporatization through diverse musical styles including pop, rock, folk, and country. Underscores is also a member of the experimental electronic collective Six Impala and the bedroom pop band Papaya & Friends.
