A Touch of Class, or ATC, was an international Eurodance group formed in Germany in 1998, comprising four talented members from diverse backgrounds: Joseph “Joey” Murray from New Zealand, Sarah Egglestone from Australia, Livio Salvi from Italy, and Tracey Elizabeth Packham from England. The group initially met while performing in the German production of the musical Cats, where their shared passion for music led them to create a dance group. Their chemistry and unique blend of male and female vocals set them apart in the Eurodance scene.
Their breakout hit, “Around the World (La La La La La),” released in 2000, became a sensation, topping the German charts for six weeks and achieving international acclaim. The song, an English cover of the Russian hit “Pesenka,” showcased their innovative sound and catchy melodies, earning them an ECHO award for Best Dance Act in 2001. Their debut album, Planet Pop, solidified their place in the music industry, featuring tracks that resonated with fans across Europe.
Despite their initial success, the group faced challenges, including a legal dispute over their name, which forced them to rebrand as A Touch of Class. Their second album, Touch the Sky, did not replicate the success of their debut, leading to their disbandment in 2003. However, the members remained friends and continued to pursue music in various forms, with Murray and Salvi forming a cover band in 2016.
The impact of ATC on the Eurodance genre is undeniable, as their music continues to inspire new artists and resonate with fans. Their legacy is marked by the enduring popularity of “Around the World,” which has been covered and sampled by numerous artists, ensuring that their contribution to the music world remains relevant even years after their disbandment.
