Musa Appreciate Makamu, known professionally as Musa Keys, was born in Giyani and raised in Flora Park, Polokwane, South Africa. His musical journey began in the church, where he developed skills as a pianist, which he credits for his technical approach to music composition and arrangement. He started his career by producing and singing his own music, including mixing and mastering, which established him as a self-sufficient artist early on. His early work included covers on YouTube and participation in various bands before he moved into the Amapiano genre.
Musa Keys gained prominence with his contribution to Caltonic SA’s 2019 track ‘Heat Overload.’ His solo breakthrough came in 2020 with ‘Samaritan Boy’, distinguished by its unique mumbling vocal style. This approach was further solidified with his 2021 hit single ‘Vula Mlomo,’ featuring Nobantu Vilakazi. ‘Vula Mlomo’ achieved double platinum certification from the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) and won Record of the Year at the 28th annual South African Music Awards (SAMAs).
In 2021, Musa Keys released his debut album ‘TAYO,’ meaning “source of joy” in Yoruba. The song ‘Selema (Po Po)’ from this album gained significant recognition and was later remixed with Nigerian singer Victony. His career has also seen international touring, including “Keys to Africa Tour” and “Keys to the World Tour,” performing in various countries across Africa and internationally. He received a Metro FM Music Award for Best Styled Artist in 2023 and was nominated for Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2022. In 2024, he received a Grammy Awards nomination for Best African Music Performance for his collaboration with Davido on “Unavailable.”
