About

Aaron Joseph Neville was born on January 24, 1941, in New Orleans, Louisiana. His career began gaining momentum with the independent release of “Over You” in 1960. He achieved national recognition with his 1966 single “Tell It Like It Is,” which topped Billboard’s R&B chart for five weeks in 1967 and reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. This song sold over one million copies and was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. His early work established him as a significant voice within R&B.

Neville’s career saw a resurgence in the late 1980s when he collaborated with Linda Ronstadt on the album “Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind” in 1989. This collaboration produced the Grammy-winning number one hits “Don’t Know Much” and “All My Life.” The album achieved triple platinum status. Following this success, Ronstadt produced his 1991 album “Warm Your Heart,” which included the hit single “Everybody Plays the Fool” and was certified platinum. In the 1990s, Neville further expanded his musical scope, releasing platinum-selling albums “The Grand Tour” and “Aaron Neville’s Soulful Christmas.”

His venture into country music in 1994 led to a Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals for “I Fall to Pieces” with Trisha Yearwood, making him one of the few African American artists to win a Grammy in the country genre. He also contributed to various compilations and performed the national anthem at the Super Bowl on two occasions, including a notable 2006 rendition with Aretha Franklin and Dr. John. In 2023, he earned his fourth Grammy Award for Best American Roots Performance for “Stompin’ Ground” with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and he was recognized in Rolling Stone’s 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.
