Gabrielle Olivia Mirville, professionally known as Abra, was born on March 30, 1989, in New York City, New York. Her early life was spent in London, England, for eight years due to her missionary parents from Guyana and Haiti, where her father was a pastor and her mother led praise and worship. This early exposure to music in a church setting fostered her initial engagement with singing. Following their time in London, her family relocated to Lilburn, a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. At the age of 14, Abra began learning to play the guitar, further developing her musical foundation. She attended Parkview High School, where she was actively involved in the drama department, graduating in 2007.
Abra’s career began to take shape in her late teens when she started uploading acoustic renditions of rap songs to YouTube. This activity led to her discovery by Father, the founder of Awful Records, who encouraged her to produce original music. She officially joined Awful Records in 2014, finding inspiration and a supportive environment within the collective. In 2015, she released her first EP, “BLQ Velvet.” This was followed by her studio album, “Rose,” released in 2015, which included the song “Fruit” and was recognized by The Guardian as one of the best R&B songs of 2016. Her second EP, “Princess,” was released on July 15, 2016, through True Panther Sounds, marking her first release on a major label.
Abra expanded her creative work into acting, starring in the 2018 film “Assassination Nation” as Em. This experience, though labor-intensive, further showcased her range beyond music. Throughout her career, Abra has been recognized for her distinct musical style, which Dazed characterized as featuring “often-looming, bass-heavy production, laced with hypnotically melodic and vulnerable lyricism,” incorporating elements of trap music, electronic music, and rhythm and blues. In 2023, she released the single “FKA MESS”, described as a “six-minute experimental pop excursion” by The Fader, demonstrating her continued evolution as an artist.
