About

Benjamin Charles Harper was born on October 28, 1969, in Pomona, California. He began playing guitar during his childhood and was significantly influenced by the folk and blues music heard at his maternal grandparents’ music store, the Folk Music Center and Museum. This early exposure to varied musical styles, including regular visits from artists like Taj Mahal, laid the foundation for his eclectic musical career. By age twelve, Harper performed his first gig, and during his teenage years, he developed a distinctive slide guitar style, often using a Weissenborn slide guitar. His musical journey progressed with an invitation from Taj Mahal to tour and record, which included the album “Follow the Drinking Gourd” in November 1990.

In 1992, Harper recorded “Pleasure and Pain” with Tom Freund, leading to a lifetime record deal with Virgin Records. His debut album, “Welcome to the Cruel World,” was released in 1994, followed by “Fight For Your Mind” in 1995. These early works established his presence in the music scene, garnering critical acclaim and significant airplay, especially in Europe and Australia. Over the years, Harper released twelve studio albums, toured extensively, and became recognized for his activism.

Harper is a three-time Grammy Award winner and seven-time nominee, earning awards for Best Pop Instrumental Performance and Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album in 2004, and Best Blues Album in 2013 for “Get Up!” with Charlie Musselwhite. His collaborations span various genres and artists, from the Blind Boys of Alabama to Jack Johnson. In 2019, his composition with Charlie Musselwhite, “No Mercy in This Land,” was named Song of the Year at the 40th Blues Music Awards. Harper continues to explore diverse musical textures, as seen with his 2020 solo instrumental album “Winter Is for Lovers” and his 2023 release “Wide Open Light,” which features stripped-back acoustic songs.
