Alfie George Templeman, born on January 26, 2003, in Carlton, Bedfordshire, began his musical journey early, recording demos at just 13 years old. Growing up around his father’s guitar collection, he developed an interest in drums at age seven and received his first guitar at eight. Self-taught in most instruments, Templeman started making CDs with friends by age ten and gained proficiency in music production software by 13. His ability to produce full-length tracks from simple instrumentals, encouraged by his mother to sing, led to his professional solo debut in 2018. That year, he released his debut single “Orange Juice” and the EP “Like an Animal” through Chess Club Records, all recorded in his bedroom.
After completing his GCSEs in 2019, Templeman left high school at 16 to pursue music full-time. He quickly released two more EPs, “Sunday Morning Cereal” and “Don’t Go Wasting Time.” His career progression included performing at the O2 Academy Brixton in April 2019, supporting Sundara Karma. He also supported Sports Team on their UK tour and played at festivals like Five Day Forecast and Eurosonic Noorderslag in 2020. His 2020 single “Happiness in Liquid Form” was added to rotation on Australian youth broadcaster Triple J, and “Forever Isn’t Long Enough” launched with an Annie Mac’s Hottest Record in the World on BBC Radio 1. Both “Happiness in Liquid Form” and “Obvious Guy” earned spots on the Radio 1 C List, signaling his growing presence in the music scene.
Templeman continued to gain recognition, being shortlisted for MTV Push UK & IRE 2021 for best upcoming artists in November 2020. His debut studio album, “Mellow Moon,” released in May 2022 through Chess Club Records, was critically acclaimed and described by British Vogue as making him “a soon to be international rising star.” “Mellow Moon” was also an album of the week in The Guardian. In June 2024, he released his second studio album, “Radiosoul.” This album showcased a wider sonic palette, drawing inspiration from artists like Björk and Todd Rundgren (with whom he collaborated in 2022 on “Space Force”), and featured a collaboration with Nile Rodgers on the track “Just a Dance.” He performed on BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend festival in Luton in May 2024. Templeman has been open about his experiences with depression and anxiety, and in 2024, he joined over 100 acts boycotting The Great Escape Festival in protest of Barclays’ investments.
