Robert Steven Belew was born in Covington, Kentucky, on December 23, 1949. Initially known as “Steve,” he began his musical journey playing drums in his youth, including with his high school cover band, the Denems. An illness at 17, mononucleosis, led him to take up the guitar, inspired by Jimi Hendrix. He is largely self-taught, developing a custom style of guitar playing which often resembles animal noises or industrial sounds. Seeking a career in music, Belew moved to Nashville in the mid-1970s and by 1977, was playing with the band Sweetheart. It was during this time that he was discovered by Frank Zappa, marking a significant turning point in his career.
Belew joined Frank Zappa’s band in 1977 and 1978, touring and contributing to the 1979 album *Sheik Yerbouti* and concert film *Baby Snakes*. During this period, he honed his skills as a rhythm and lead guitarist, vocalist, and performer, describing it as a “crash course” in music theory. Following his work with Zappa, David Bowie recruited Belew in 1978 for his Isolar II world tour and the 1979 album *Lodger*. His multifaceted talents continued to be in high demand, leading to collaborations with Talking Heads and their affiliated projects, including *Remain in Light* (1980) and *The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads* (1982). This period also saw him working with Tom Tom Club on their self-titled debut album.
In 1981, Belew launched his solo career with the album *Lone Rhino*, allowing him to showcase his unique songwriting and instrumental approach. Concurrently, he became a core member of the progressive rock group King Crimson, serving as frontman and guitarist from 1981 to 2009. His tenure with King Crimson involved several albums and tours across different iterations of the band, including *Discipline* (1981), *Beat* (1982), *Three of a Perfect Pair* (1984), and *Thrak* (1995). Throughout his career, Belew has released numerous solo albums, participated in the band The Bears, and contributed to projects with artists like Nine Inch Nails and Paul Simon, cementing his reputation as an influential and innovative musician. He has also ventured into instrument design, collaborating with Parker Guitars, and mobile app development with his iOS apps *FLUX:FX* and *FLUX by belew*.
