Al Di Meola

Albert Laurence Di Meola, born on July 22, 1954, in Jersey City, New Jersey, developed an early passion for guitar inspired by artists like Elvis Presley and The Ventures. His musical direction solidified during his teenage years after discovering The Beatles, leading him to intense practice sessions and formal training under Robert “Bob” Aslanian, who introduced him to jazz standards. While initially influenced by rock icons, Di Meola found his true mentors in jazz guitarists George Benson and John McLaughlin, whose emotional depth and technical prowess resonated with his own aspirations.

Di Meola attended Berklee College of Music in 1971, dedicating himself to consistent practice. At age 19, he joined Chick Corea’s jazz fusion band Return to Forever in 1974, replacing Bill Connors. This period marked a significant turning point, with Di Meola contributing to three commercially successful albums that landed on the Billboard pop albums chart, including “No Mystery” (1975), which earned a Grammy for Best Jazz Performance by a Group. Concurrently, Di Meola launched his solo career with “Land of the Midnight Sun” (1976), showcasing his command of technical guitar, complex compositions, and explorations into Mediterranean cultures and acoustic genres. His subsequent album, “Elegant Gypsy” (1977), achieved gold certification and was supported by a successful tour with Weather Report.

A pivotal career moment arrived in 1980 with the release of “Friday Night in San Francisco,” a live album recorded with John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucía. This best-selling album sold seven million copies worldwide, cementing his status as a guitar virtuoso. Throughout the 1980s, Di Meola continued to innovate, incorporating vocals and the Synclavier guitar synthesizer into his work. His album “Cielo e Terra” (1985) marked a shift towards acoustic and world music, initiating a “Brazilian” phase. In 2008, Di Meola and Return to Forever received the BBC Jazz “Lifetime Achievement Award,” and he was awarded an honorary doctorate of music from Berklee College of Music, recognizing his lasting impact on music.
