Alan Menken

Alan Menken achieved critical and commercial success with the Off-Broadway production Little Shop of Horrors in 1982, a pivotal collaboration with lyricist Howard Ashman that stemmed from their earlier work on God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater in 1979. This partnership continued to flourish, leading to a 1986 musical film adaptation of Little Shop of Horrors that earned Menken his first Academy Award nomination for the song ‘Mean Green Mother from Outer Space.’ Their groundbreaking contributions to Walt Disney Studios ushered in the Disney Renaissance, beginning with The Little Mermaid in 1989, for which Menken won his first two Academy Awards and Grammy Awards. He followed this with two more Academy Awards for Beauty and the Beast in 1991, an additional two for Aladdin in 1992, and two for Pocahontas in 1995.

Menken continued to compose for numerous Disney films including The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) and Hercules (1997), consistently receiving critical acclaim. His work extended beyond animation to live-action features such as Newsies (1992) and Enchanted (2007), garnering further recognition. A celebrated figure in musical theatre, Menken successfully adapted many of his acclaimed Disney film scores for Broadway, including Beauty and the Beast (1994), The Little Mermaid (2008), and Aladdin (2014). His original stage compositions include A Christmas Carol (1994), King David (1997), Sister Act (2011), and Leap of Faith (2012).

He also co-composed for the television series Galavant from 2015-2016. Menken’s recent work includes the film Disenchanted (2022), continuing his tradition of creating memorable scores for beloved stories. Looking ahead, he is composing for the upcoming animated film Spellbound slated for 2024, and the television series Tiana, which is currently in development. Additionally, his contributions will be featured in the post-production film Aladdin: Live from the West End, showcasing his ongoing influence across various platforms and genres.
