Alan Menken is a highly accomplished American composer, songwriter, music conductor, director, and record producer, widely recognized for his extensive contributions to Walt Disney Animation Studios and musical theatre.
Alan Menken is best known for his scores and songs for films produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. His work for 'The Little Mermaid,' 'Beauty and the Beast,' 'Aladdin,' and 'Pocahontas' each won him two Academy Awards. He also composed for 'Newsies,' 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame,' 'Hercules,' and 'Tangled,' among others.
As the composer behind The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin, Alan Menken has created some of Disney's most recognizable scores and songs. His contributions include 'The Little Mermaid' (1989), 'Beauty and the Beast' (1991), 'Aladdin' (1992), 'Pocahontas' (1995), 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame' (1996), 'Hercules' (1997), 'Home on the Range' (2004), 'Enchanted' (2007), 'Tangled' (2010), 'Disenchanted' (2022), and 'Spellbound' (2024).
Menken has established a significant presence in musical theatre, with hits such as 'Little Shop of Horrors' (1982), 'A Christmas Carol' (1994), and 'Sister Act' (2009). Many of his Disney film scores, including 'Beauty and the Beast,' 'The Little Mermaid,' and 'Aladdin,' have also been adapted into successful stage productions.
Menken honed his craft in writing musicals at the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop, where he joined a community of other composers.
From 1989 to 1990, Menken contributed songs to the popular puppet TV show 'Sesame Street', which he described as 'pathetic money, but it still had some prestige to it. It was on the air and [he] was getting some royalties.'
Menken composed music for various live-action Disney films including 'Newsies' (1992), 'Life with Mikey' (1993), 'The Shaggy Dog' (2006), 'Enchanted' (2007), 'Tangled' (2010). He also contributed to live-action remakes of 'Beauty and the Beast' (2017), 'Aladdin' (2019), 'Ralph Breaks the Internet' (2018), 'Disenchanted' (2022), and 'The Little Mermaid' (2023).
In December 2010, Menken was a guest on the NPR quiz show 'Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!'
Menken is working with former Disney chief creative officer John Lasseter on a project at Skydance Animation, which was later revealed to be the film 'Spellbound' (2024).
Menken participated in the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular 2017, where his piece 'The Sum of Us' (lyrics by Jack Feldman) premiered, featuring Brian Stokes Mitchell, the U.S. Army Soldier's Chorus, and the Boston Pops Orchestra.
Alan Menken, originally Alan Irwin Menken, was born on July 22, 1949, in New Rochelle, New York. His early life was immersed in music, with his father being a boogie-woogie piano-playing dentist and his mother an actress, dancer, and playwright. Menken began piano and violin lessons at an early age, demonstrating a natural talent for composition. By age nine, his original composition “Bouree” received superior and excellent ratings at the New York Federation of Music Clubs Junior Composers Contest. He initially pursued a pre-medical program at New York University but ultimately earned a degree in music, continuing his education at the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop where he honed his craft in musical theatre.
Menken’s career gained significant momentum through his collaboration with lyricist Howard Ashman. Their early work included the musical adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut’s novel “God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater” in 1979. This partnership led to their breakthrough success with the Off-Broadway production “Little Shop of Horrors” in 1982, which later became a 1986 musical film, earning them their first Oscar nomination. This success brought them to Walt Disney Studios, where they began a transformative period known as the Disney Renaissance. Their work on “The Little Mermaid” (1989) earned Menken his first two Academy Awards, followed by two more for “Beauty and the Beast” (1991), and an additional two for “Aladdin” (1992). He continued composing for numerous Disney films, including “Pocahontas” (1995), “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” (1996), and “Hercules” (1997), consistently receiving critical acclaim and multiple awards.
Beyond film, Menken has a profound impact on musical theatre. He adapted many of his Disney film scores for Broadway productions, such as “Beauty and the Beast” (1994) and “The Little Mermaid” (2008). His original stage works include “A Christmas Carol” (1994) and “Sister Act” (2009). A significant career milestone came in 2012 when he won a Tony Award for Best Original Score for “Newsies.” In 2020, Menken achieved EGOT status with a Daytime Emmy Award for “Waiting in the Wings” from “Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure,” making him one of the few individuals to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award. His continuous work includes live-action Disney adaptations like “Aladdin” (2019) and “The Little Mermaid” (2023), further cementing his legacy in both film and stage.
