Lola Emily Mary Young, born on January 4, 2001, in Croydon, London, began her musical journey at a young age, writing songs by 11 and performing at open mic nights by 14. She attended the prestigious BRIT School, an institution known for nurturing talents like Amy Winehouse and Adele. In January 2016, she won the under-16 category of the Open Mic UK competition and appeared on CBBC’s ‘Got What It Takes?’. Her early career saw her release debut single ‘6 Feet Under’ in October 2019, followed by the EP ‘Intro’. Her early promotions were interrupted by vocal cord surgery. By March 2020, she had signed with Capitol Records, releasing singles such as ‘Pick Me Up’ and ‘None for You’, and the ‘Renaissance’ EP.
Island Records later signed Young in March 2021, leading to the release of ‘Ruin My Make Up’. She gained significant recognition for her rendition of Giorgio Moroder and Philip Oakey’s ‘Together in Electric Dreams’, which was featured in the 2021 John Lewis Christmas advert. She was nominated for the Brit Award for Rising Star in 2021 and placed fourth in the BBC Sound of 2022 poll. Her debut album, ‘My Mind Wanders and Sometimes Leaves Completely’, was released in May 2023, featuring tracks that explored her schizoaffective disorder. Although the album did not chart, her song ‘Don’t Hate Me’ found viral success on TikTok.
Her career saw a major turning point with the release of ‘Messy’ in 2024. The song, which gained viral popularity on TikTok, topped the UK Singles Chart for four weeks and charted internationally, including reaching number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. This success led to collaborations and features, including ‘Like Him’ with Tyler, the Creator, which also charted in the UK and US. Young released her album ‘This Wasn’t Meant for You Anyway’ in June 2024, followed by ‘I’m Only Fucking Myself’ in September 2025, which debuted at number 3 on the UK Albums Chart. She has been listed on Forbes 30 Under 30 and won the Ivor Novello Award for Rising Star in 2025. Throughout 2025, Young continued performing, including supporting Billie Eilish in Paris and making notable festival appearances.
