Algiers is an innovative American-English post-punk band formed in 2012 in London, consisting of multi-instrumentalists Franklin James Fisher, Ryan Mahan, Lee Tesche, and Matt Tong. The band has carved a unique niche in the music scene by blending diverse influences, including post-punk, hip-hop, and Southern Gothic literature, resulting in a sound described as dystopian soul. Their debut single, “Blood,” released in January 2012, showcased their distinctive style and set the stage for their self-titled debut album, which was released through Matador Records in June 2015. Following their debut, Algiers continued to evolve, releasing their second studio album, “The Underside of Power,” in June 2017. In 2020, Algiers released their third album, “There Is No Year,” which included the explosive single “Can the Sub_Bass Speak?” Their live performances, characterized by a captivating blend of genres, have solidified their reputation as a dynamic live act. The band made their network television debut on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” further expanding their reach and influence.
Most recently, Algiers released their fourth studio album, “Shook,” in February 2023, following the impactful singles “Bite Back” and “Irreversible Damage.” Their innovative mixtape, “Shook World,” released in January 2023, showcased their ability to merge various musical elements and featured collaborations with a diverse array of artists. Algiers continues to push the envelope in music, making significant contributions to the post-punk genre and beyond.
